An airport transfer is a simple trip with a lot riding on it. The car has to be at the door on time, the bags have to fit, and the ride has to leave you rested enough to walk into a terminal or a meeting. Choosing the right vehicle is most of that work done in advance.

Start with the luggage, not the passengers

Most people count heads first. Count bags first. A pair of travelers with four checked suitcases, two carry-ons and a garment bag will fill a cargo area that comfortably swallows the luggage of four travelers on a short trip. Think about what is actually coming: checked cases, carry-ons, backpacks, a stroller, golf clubs, skis, a musical instrument, a box of conference materials. Then consider whether any of it must ride in the cabin rather than the cargo area.

Count the passengers honestly

Seating capacity describes the number of seat belts. Comfort describes something else. Two adults in the second row of a large SUV is a pleasant ride; three adults in that row for an hour on the Beltway is a compromise. For a short DCA run from Arlington, the compromise may be fine. For a Dulles arrival after an overnight flight, it is not.

If your party is at the limit for a vehicle, mention it in the request. The team may suggest a larger car or a second vehicle, and the difference is often smaller than people expect.

Consider the time of day and the length of the drive

A pre-dawn departure to BWI from Bethesda, a late-evening arrival at Dulles after an international flight and a midday transfer from a downtown hotel to DCA are three different trips. The longer and later the drive, the more the cabin matters: seat comfort, quiet, climate control and room to stretch. A vehicle that is more than adequate for twenty minutes may feel small after an hour.

Match the vehicle to the airport

DCA's compact layout means short walks and quick curb access, so almost any vehicle works well there. Dulles and BWI involve longer drives and, for international arrivals, more luggage per person on average. For those airports, a larger SUV with generous cargo space is usually the better choice, even for a couple.

The electric luxury SUV

The 2026 Cadillac Escalade IQL is our recommendation for most airport transfers involving more than two passengers or more than a few bags. The cabin is spacious and near silent, which turns a long drive from Dulles into an opportunity to rest or take a call. Its cargo area handles international luggage without difficulty, and its electric drivetrain makes stop-and-go traffic on the parkway smoother than it has any right to be.

When a distinctive vehicle makes sense

The 2025 Tesla Cybertruck draws attention, and some travelers want exactly that: a visiting guest who would enjoy the novelty, a founder arriving for a launch, or simply a traveler who prefers something unexpected. It carries luggage well and its cabin is comfortable. For a discreet arrival at a formal function, it is not the natural choice, and we will say so.

When less is more

The 2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Ti suits a single traveler or a couple with modest luggage who value an understated car and a driver's sense of the road. It is a fine choice for a DCA transfer from Georgetown or Old Town and for shorter Dulles runs from Tysons and Reston. For a family with international luggage, it is the wrong tool, and the vehicle pages make that clear.

A short checklist

List every bag, including the ones that ride in the cabin
Count passengers and think about comfort over the actual drive time
Note the airport, the time of day and whether the flight is international
Share the flight number so the pickup follows the flight
Mention child seats, mobility aids or oversized items in the request

Choose with these in mind and the transfer will be what it should be: uneventful.
